Volunteer Ideas in the Dallas/Fort Worth Texas Area
Are you looking to become more involved in your community? Are you new to the Dallas, TX area and want to serve your community and meet new people? I have listed below some great ways and websites in the Dallas/Fort Worth Area to explore. Whether you are looking to commit yourself full time to community service and volunteer work or just looking to give your time a couple weekends a month, there is a way to get involved! Don't live in the Dallas Area? I have listed at the bottom other links for cities like Austin and Houston.
Meetup Groups
Meetup.com is an easy way to get involved with a variety of groups or belong to more than one volunteer group. The groups on Meetup are organized by local individuals who host the groups through the Meetup.com site. Groups have an organizer and often several assistant organizers. These groups post a variety of events. Sign up for a group that interests you (Meetup.com is free to belong to) and find a group that you can get more involved with. Meetup has a big community in the Dallas area and people often belong to a few groups that reflect a variety of interests. The Young Adult Volunteer Organization is an example of group in their 20's and 30's who volunteer in their community primarily on the weekends and host a variety of volunteer events.

This website allows you to search for volunteer opportunities on your area and also enter a key word. For example if you like to work with animals you can search by keyword 'animals' to find specific groups to volunteer with.
United Way of Metropolitan Dallas
The United Way is a large country-wide organization with a local Dallas chapter. The United Way serves several communities and interests and you can learn more about the existing opportunities by signing up for free with the United Way. Also, many corporations in Dallas are involved with the United Way. If you work for a large company, check with your employer to find out if they are involved with United Way and what events are happening you can become a part of with your company.
Volunteer for a Cause
Do you have a particular cause you support? Check with the website of a cause you support for volunteer events that occur throughout the year. For example, the Multiple Sclerosis Society has a Texas Lone Star Chapter and volunteer opportunities are found on the organization's website. Even through there are only a few benefit events in the Dallas/Fort Worth area every year for this group (i.e. Bike MS, MS Walk), you can also find other Texas events within a couple hours drive to local cities like Austin.
The American Cancer Society lists volunteer events on the website to learn how to become involved in your area. Thinking of a cause you support? Most large organizations have a link on their site to learn more about how you can become involved.
Volunteer Online or From Home
Yes, you can volunteer online if you would like to do so! You can volunteer from home through advocacy projects and Charity Guide.org lists ideas of how you can help others. The site includes suggestions for ways to help in your neighborhood (organize recycling projects) and other ways to volunteer you may not have thought of (i.e. Make a LifeBook for a Child in Foster Care.) If you don't feel you have the hours to participate in an event there are things you can still do to help your community and volunteer from home.
